Here is a list of steps that very simply go over what you will expect when operating the Ester Machine. If you have questions, don't hesitate to contact us. (319) 545-7022
• Step 1: Testing Your Oil
Testing your oil involves performing a quick titration test. This test takes no longer than one minute and will tell you how much catalyst you will need to neutralize the free fatty acids in your oil. The better quality oil you collect, the less catalyst you will need to use. We use KOH as a catalyst.
• Step 2: Mix Your Methoxide
When processing a 40 gallon batch you will need 8 gallons of methanol. To create methoxide you mix your methanol with your catalyst (KOH).
• Step 3: Heating Your Oil
You must heat the oil in the processor to 130F.
• Step 4: Inject Your Catalyst
Once your oil is up to temperature, you inject the catalyst via a quick disconnect. This process will take less than 10 minutes. If you are working with oil that titrated high, we recommend doing a two-stage reaction process.
• Step 5: You Will Now Process Your Oil for 1 Hour
• Step 6: Drain the Glycerol From the Biodiesel
After your oil has processed for 1hr you will pump the processed biodiesel into the wash/dry barrels. The Ester Machine processes 40 gallons of biodiesel at one time. Once you have processed two batches drain the glycerol from the bottom of the wash/dry barrels. You will drain off approximately 16 gallons of glycerol.
• Step 7: Washing Your Fuel
The Ester Machine mist washes your biodiesel. You will need to connect a garden hose to The Ester Machine and drain the wash water as the biodiesel reaches the top of the wash/dry barrels. Washing your fuel will take approximately 1 to ½ hour.
• Step 8: Drying Your Fuel
After washing, you will need to dry your biodiesel. This process will vary in length depending on humidity and the quality of feedstock you started with. The Ester Machine flash evaporates the water that is left in your biodiesel after washing. This process could take anywhere from a few hours to a day.
• Step 9: Revel in the fact that you can fill your tank with
homemade biodiesel!
